About Hair Transplants:

A Hair Transplant is a medical procedure that harvests genetically resistant hair follicles from one area of the body, and transplants them (moves them) to another area of the body. It is only medical treatment that is proven to grow more new hair.  There are two hair transplant techniques.
• FUT, FUG or FUSS – also known as – Follicular Unit Transfer Hair Transplant Surgery
• FUE – also known as – Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant Surgery

How Hair Transplants work?

Patients with androgenetic alopecia (aka hereditary hair loss or genetic hair loss) experience hair loss to the top, crown & frontal hair line areas of the scalp, however not to the hairs on the sides & back of the head.
• This is because these in the hair loss regions are genetically prone to weaken when they come into contact with DHT.
• DHT is known as the hair loss hormone.
• The hair loss gene needs to be present for DHT cause hair loss, without the balding gene DHT will not impact your hair follicles.

• DHT does not impact the hair’s on the sides or the back of the scalp.  Therefore the hair follicles on the sides & back of the scalp are known to be permanent to the effects of DHT.
• Hair Transplantation surgically sources these genetically resistant hair follicles and MOVES them to the area’s where a patient wants them.
• The hair follicle is MOVED, meaning it will no longer grow a hair from its original location.
• Once MOVED, the hair follicle will commence growing new hair.

Benefits:

Hair Transplants are the ONLY proven method to grow more new hair where you are no longer growing it.
Transplanted hair is genetically RESISTANT to further genetic hair loss, therefore the transplanted grafts do not require daily drugs or daily lotions.

Risks:

When a hair is transplanted, a HAIR FOLLICLE is being MOVED, therefore a hair will no longer grow in the area where it was originally.
A hair transplant does not CLONE or COPY hair – it moves it from one location to another.
• There is not an unlimited supply of hair for transplantation, therefore it is NOT possible to attain a full head of hair with a hair transplant
• A Hair Transplant will NOT treat thinning hair & promote it to regrow thicker & healthier
A Hair Transplant will NOT help to slow or prevent further hair loss
Some hair transplant clinics recommend a hair transplant to boost thinning or receding hair.  At Great Directions, we do NOT recommend this approach at all! A transplant REPLACES the hair you have lost, it can NOT thicken thinning hair.

Hair Transplant Frequently Asked Questions

Is a hair transplant a permanent hair loss treatment?
NO
• Because the transplant will not PREVENT further hair loss.  The transplanted hairs are permanent to the effects of DHT and Genetic Hair Loss, however they are not resistant to the impacts of other forms of hair loss or alopecia.

Can a hair transplant give you a full head of hair?
 NO
A hair transplant can help patients to achieve a FULLER head of hair, however it can not achieve a “FULL” head of hair. This is because a transplant does not CLONE or COPY hair, it relocates it.  Therefore a hair transplant is like “redistributing” your hair.  Therefore a hair transplant is like spreading out the remaining hair you have left.

Does the transplanted hair need any medication before, during or after the hair transplant procedure?
• NO
• The transplanted hair follicles are resistant to the impacts of DHT and Genetic Hair Loss.  No Medication is mandatory for these hair follicles.
• HOWEVER, we recommend patients consider some form of hair loss treatment to slow + prevent further hair loss of the non-transplanted hair.  Therefore the non-transplanted hair will combine & enhance the coverage of the scalp – for longer!

Hair Transplant Frequently Asked Questions

How many grafts do I need?
Please watch this video – to the right of screen
• When you ask a hair transplant clinic how many grafts do you need, after they have asked you that question, ask them this:
“Can you please show me 5 patients who you have performed surgery on within the last 5 years, who have received ___# of grafts to treat an area that matches the size of the area that I am looking to treat?”

Is there an age limit for hair transplant procedures?
• Technically no.
• However, the patient is STRONGLY recommended to ensure they treat an area in its entirety.  This means, if you are partially balding in your frontal hair line, you should ONLY do a hair transplant if you can re-create the frontal hair line completely.  Temporal hair transplants are notorious for requiring multiple procedures into the same area, because the hair behind the hair transplants recipient area continues to get worse.
• Whether the patient is 25yrs of age or 65yrs of age.  Making sure you are a suitable candidate is strongly advised before considering a hair transplant procedure.

Are FUE Hair Transplants “scar free”?
• No.  FUE Sources the hair by taking singular hair follicles across a large area. To safely extract the hair follicle from the donor region requires a surgical device to be used to “extract” or “dig out” the hair follicle.  This surgical extraction process will leave a small round scar where the hair follicle was extracted from.  FUE hair transplant scars appear in a spread out pattern, whereas FUT hair transplant scars appear in the form of a line.  Because FUT Hair Transplants extract hair by removing an entire piece of skin VS FUE hair transplants which take hair in a dispersed pattern.
• Including PRP treatments before receiving a hair transplant has shown to assist in preparing the skin for the trauma of a hair transplant.  Therefore reducing the severity of the scar by encouraging the skin to heal faster.
